World Languages
The EHS World Language Department provides students with the opportunity to enjoy, understand, and appreciate other cultures and languages. Spanish and French are taught at Evergreen High School. Students are encouraged to carry their new language skills outside the classroom as well as continue to upper-level language courses to prepare for the Jeffco Seal of Biliteracy exam.
Spanish 1 – 4
Spanish is a study of language skills and is taught in a classroom setting with activities based on listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Grammar and additional vocabulary are added to the fundamentals of a second language with a level of difficulty that challenges the students.
The purpose of this course is to develop proficiency in listening, speaking, and writing skills at the novice/novice low level. Students will be able to read and understand the second language selections written at their language level; develop a vocabulary pertinent to daily life and communicate in a realistic environment.
EMS Students: Students at EMS who successfully complete Spanish 101 and 102 will take Spanish 2 at EHS as a freshman.
French 1 – 4

Moreover, French enhances your global mobility. Whether you're pursuing business, diplomacy, or academia, speaking French opens doors to diverse cultures and networks. French is spoken by 300 million people worldwide and it is the official language in 29 countries. Furthermore, French is one of the two languages of the NATO alliance and is a sanctioned language of the UN and the European Union.
Seal of Biliteracy:
- The Jeffco Seal of Biliteracy is a recognition of students who demonstrate a high level of proficiency in at least one world language and English by high school graduation.
- EHS Class of 2023: 25% of graduates obtained the Seal of Biliteracy.
University Requirements:
There is no World Language requirement to graduate from a Jefferson County High School

World Languages in Jeffco
World language programs in Jeffco Public Schools invite students to explore the world and their place in it through the study of languages and cultures. Jeffco offers courses in Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Latin and Spanish. Jeffco also offers Spanish for Heritage Speakers to honor and support the development and maintenance of heritage language.
Jeffco strives to educate students to become communicatively proficient and globally competent in languages other than English with a curriculum aligned to national standards. Students will have opportunities to use their cultural and linguistic knowledge outside of the classroom, with travel, cultural events, performances and competitions.
