English Language Arts

Summer Assignments

MISSION STATEMENT:

The EHS English department prepares students as future professionals and responsible, productive citizens through the close study of language, writing, literature, and culture. Coursework in English offers transformative experiences with texts and ideas that cultivate imaginative, open-minded individuals who contribute thoughtfully and effectively to diverse and dynamic communities. Emphasizing the application of knowledge in both the private and public spheres, we empower our students long past graduation by helping them develop their skills in reading, writing, research, collaboration, and communication.

The work of the English Department fosters an appreciation for the beauty and power of the English language and promotes personal reflection, intellectual curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking. Our programs nurture and refine the analytical, collaborative, and expressive abilities that make EHS graduates successful members of the global community.

VISION STATEMENT:

The EHS English Department prepares students to think, read, write, and act with depth, integrity, precision, and imagination, in support of their own intellectual development and in service to a more just and inclusive world. We bring over 175 years of combined teaching experience to this task.

To achieve this vision, we will:

  • cultivate readers and writers to explore the diversity of human experience, and build a student body who respect that diversity;
  • cultivate individuals who can gather, analyze, and communicate information while drawing independent conclusions;
  • foster not only critical thinking and creativity, but also the understand the value of their individual intellectual pursuits;
  • foster technological literacy as in retrieval of information, research, communication, and ethics;
  • provide transformative educational opportunities, which promote leadership skills, community engagement, and inclusive empathy through the study of literature and language and the self.

EVERGREEN HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH PATHWAYS

Students are required to take English for four years at Evergreen High School.

There are two common paths:
   1) English 9 (Pre-AP) ⇒ English 10 (Pre-AP) ⇒ English 11 ⇒
             English 12 (Genre study or Composition/Capstone)
   2) English 9 Honors (Pre-AP) ⇒ English 10 Honors (Pre-AP) ⇒
             AP English 11 ⇒ AP English 12.
Students are not “locked in” to either path; there is a certain amount of free agency.
For example:
         Student A is enrolled in English 9 first semester.
         Does exceptionally well, has earned an A.
         Feels up to the challenge of an Honors course.
         Receives recommendation from current English teacher.
         Student A can then take English 9 Honors second semester.
Also, it is possible to take an AP level class for the first time as a junior or senior with a recommendation from their current English teacher. At the same time, students enrolled in Honors or AP who do not have a C at the end of first semester are typically not enrolled in Honors or AP second semester. We encourage all students to take intellectual risks and try new things.

ENGLISH OVERVIEW:

• English 9, English 10, English 11, English 12
  These classes are all college-prep based. A student who successfully
  completes their English classes at EHS will be ready for Freshman
  Composition in just about any college or university.

• AP classes no longer require students to take the appropriate AP
  test. However, most colleges require scoring a 3 or above on an AP
  test to receive credit, but that is school dependent. AP 11 focuses on
  Rhetoric and Composition while AP 12 focuses on Literature and
  Composition.
